The Wedding Night, Caricature by Isaac Cruikshank
The British Royal Family was a favorite target of caricaturists such as the Cruikshanks. The British press was in fact ruthless in its attacks and enjoyed a surprising amount of freedom.
Isaac Cruikshank took full advantage of the press freedom in Britain and published vulgar caricatures of the King and his entourage. Here is a depiction of a royal wedding. The bride and groom are both depicted as grotesque. One servant is carrying a large sack of money, implying that the marriage was one of convenience meant to obtain financial advantage.
